Shelley Beattie

Very sad news: Shelley Beattie passed away on February 13. She was 39. Her ex-husband John Romano posted an obituary notice to the Muscular Development forums last night.

As "Siren", Shelley Beattie appeared on "American Gladiators" from 1992-1996.

The brief video above is clipped from an interview with Beattie. Rendered deaf following accidental poisoning in childhood, Beattie grew up to become an athlete of incredible skill and determination.

Shelley Beattie's Wikipedia entry has not been fully updated since her passing, but contains an excellent description of her life and athletic career.

Siren was one of my favorites from the original Gladiators series. I was really impressed when she worked on one of the America's Cup yacht race boats. She was that good.

Shelley Beattie was a good freind of mine, so it brings me to tears to see her talking again on the video. She was a wonderful person, and I will miss her for the rest of my life, as will many. she has taught me many things, though knowing her, she was so humble I don't think she realized how special she was and what she meant to others.

She would want people to remember her words;
"never underestimate your abilities."
and
"don't let others define who YOU are."

if you want to do something in her memory;
help a child or adult, plant a tree, volunteer to work with animals or the deaf community, be kind to others, clean up public parks, donate time and money, be there to listen to someone and offer a hug, give thanks to creator every day for what you have, or just step outside your comfort zone and try something new.

may her energy live on forever in a positive way...

I met Shelly about two years ago. She was a wonderful caring person. She accomplished alot of things in life. She will be missed by many. I hope those close to her will find comfort in the possitive things all of you say about Shelly.

richard:

I am so sorry Shelley passed away.I admired her for all she accomplished and will miss her dearly. Rip dear Shelley,I'll never forget you.

Guest:

Damn damn damn. From a red-blooded Amercian male perspective, she was one of my top three fantasies.

As someone that also suffers from a milder form of bipolar disorder, I cannot help but feel rather lonely and sad...God rest you, Shelley...

matt:

I am shocked.I always thought she was one beautiful lady and even though she was deaf she could do whatever she set mind to and did it.I didn't know anything about her death until i ready about it.To her family and friends,I know it hurts but keep in mind all the good times you had with her and remember she will always be with you in spirit.She will watch over you,she was one of God's special angels and he knew best the call this lady home.But he never puts anymore on than you can handle.R.I.P. Shelley Beattie you were and are loved

I am very saddened to learn of Shelley's passing. As a fan of hers and the 80's 90's American Gladitators she will be deeply missed. Shelley was not just an inspiration for the deaf. But for everyone. Her determination,heart and perseverance touched millons. As for me her class and compassion spoke volumes of her character. I always wanted to meet her to let her know what a bright light she was. Shelley wherever you are. You did make a differance. The earth needs more people like you. We were all amazed by and touched. to those who knew her WOW. you were lucky. May you always win and be a bright light for us all. Rest now you deserve it.
